Transportation is essential. Our busy lives depend on it. Transportation in many ways is integral to our economy. It is our need to get to work, school and other places, however, that are radically contributing to our environmental problems.
Approximately 22% of UK carbon dioxide emissions in 2007 were attributed to transport (Source: defra). Amongst the worst of the offenders are cars.
Before leaving our homes, we should ask ourselves some simple questions:
- Is this journey necessary?
- Is there another transportation option available?
- Am I taking the most direct route?
- If driving, are there ways that I can drive more efficiently?
By asking ourselves these questions, greener options become apparent. Whether it is carpooling, purchasing a more fuel-efficient car, biking to work, or getting rid of the car all together, there are greener options available.
